We now release the second version of our Goldeneye Setup Editor/Perfect Editor for Nintendo 64's Goldeneye.

System Requirements:
DirectX 9.0c or higher / Graphics Card with Updated Drivers for DirectX 9
Microsoft VS2008 Redist

Brand New Features in Version 2.1:


Navigate through every level from Goldeneye/PD (including Citadel) visually, to any coordinate
See objects and presets visually
Move, resize, and rotate using the built-in toolbar
Insert, delete, and clone tool for objects and presets
Modify the intro swirl and camera scene positions
Select and edit multiple objects simultaneously
Insert safes and items into safes easily and quickly
View and edit clipping and portals for each level
View, create and modify guard paths visually
Export/Import .obj Room models into Goldeneye for all new levels
Quicksave your ROM by pressing F5 for testing in Project 64
Play levels with the Doctor V64 (and other backup devices)
All of the features from version 1.0, including editing all aspects of a Goldeneye setup file, grabbing coordinates from Project 64, uploading the setup and text file to console through the parallel port and GameShark, text modification, briefing edior, action block modification using Goldeneye's Pseudocode, edit the intro scene, presets, objects, and much, much more





Open an uncompressed file, or start a new file. Then open up the visual editor by Edit Setup -> Visual Editor! You have the opportunity to move around the level.

Visual Editor Basic Controls (Press F1 in Visual Editor for more comprehensive help):
Visual movement:
Q: Move Forwards
Z: Move Backwards
A: Strafe Left
D: Strafe Right
W: Move Up
X: Move Down
Left Arrow: Yaw Left
Right Arrow: Yaw Right
R: Yaw 180 Degrees
Up Arrow: Pitch Down
Down Arrow: Pitch Up
C: Roll Left
V: Roll Right
Space: Go to Nearest Room
O: Go to Previous Numbered Room
P: Go to Next Numbered Room
F1: Help Menu
F3: Screenshot
F5: Quick Convert ROM

Mouse:
Pointer: Move Mode
Up/Down Move Up/Down Node
Green Rotate: Rotate Around Object's "Up" Axis
Blue Rotate: Rotate around Object's "Right" Axis
Four Purple: Size object
Purple L/R: Resize X size of 27XX Presets/Objects
Green U/D: Resize Y size of 27XX Presets/Objects
Yellow B/F: Resize Z size of 27XX Presets/Objects


Important - To create a new level you should open the level you wish to edit, then press Tools -> Make Level Barebones. It is NOT recommended that you do File -> New, because you will be missing the path sets that allow guards to navigate a level.

The key object has to have special bitflags in the object, in the object editor. I generally copy them from one of Rare's dropped keys from any level, then it should stop crashing.

I seem to be getting a consistent problem, when I set a guard to have a key - when I kill him, the game freezes. When I restart the ROM, it works? Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't?

I believe only convert ROM dialog, and quick inject/quick convert work on PAL.

I don't think that will work, you have to do it using Quick Inject (F7) or Quick Convert (F5) I think.

There's a toggle in Preferences to set to PAL, then choose a PAL ROM. I believe there is a limited set of editor functions that work with PAL, including injecting setups, though much does not function.

Is there a way I can convert my GoldenEye created mission from NTSC to PAL? Or do I have to find a PAL ROM and then use that as the main GE ROM?

It works fine on earlier operating systems. The program is targetted to Windows 98, it may be the reason require admin in Win 8. Since we have Win 98 users, I'm not inclined to change it yet. Also, don't install to C:\\\\Program Files (x86)\\\\ or change permissions on folder.

Who thinks you can beat me in Goldeneye? I wanna create a level but i need my brother's password first. Make a level, i will complete it at Agent/00 agent. Im a Goldeneye pro. I have completed Goldeneye till Egyptian 7 times. And i was yesterday made a new map and now im at Aztec Secret Agent!

I really do not know what the problem was, I transferred it from my friends computer as he downloaded the installer for me.
It just keeps saying the program has stopped working once I try to save it. I can freely move around the visual editor, it also does not retain the memory of the selected rom or project 64.

Hi I am having trouble installing the setup editor on my new computer, it is windows 8 wondering is that a problem.
I have installed the necessary files but it always crashes when I go to save. Any ideas?

Have you tried installing it not in program files? Perhaps the issue is windows 7/8 blocking writing files to there.

I am not sure why it requires admin actually. Perhaps related to DirectX 9.0c. If I knew how to fix it I would.

Did you try the middle mouse button, to rotate your view? The fly mode is "flying". I guess you want a mode that is as if fps, but in air?

First, grab latest beta using beta grabber (run program as admin). Then, run the editor Beta Editor as administrator, and set the program to XP SP3 Compatibility mode.

I have windows 7. I loaded a level in the goldeneye editor v2. But, when i try to use the visual editor, the window turns white, freezes then says program not responding. can i get some help here?

It says no errors found. I put in Activate Path and JAL to function "wait for player detection", but it freezes even when I change the action block. It works fine when I use one of the default action blocks for the guard.

If you click "Check syntax" does it find errors? Sounds like infinite loop or something.

Hey, for some reason whenever I make a path for a guard and set his action block to activate it and wait for detection, the game always freezes before the level starts. I followed the path tutorial, don't know why it's not working.

In the Hammer Editor tutorial, it says "Convert every image to a 256-color paletted bitmap" but when I choose the name of the output ROM I get an error: "Too many colors (> 255)"

i got the program but now when i try to start it it says "The application or DDL E:\\roms\\other rom related stuff\\goldeneye editer ver 2\\d3dx9_30.ddl is not a valid windows image. please check this against your instalation diskette" but this is after i tried to move the ddl out of the cabnet i found it in because i tried it with it still in there and it said the same error i posted before. if i need to start fresh i have a back up incase i mess up the editor beyond repair just incase if it help in the future.

Basically just replace textures in Image Editor. Don't think tutorial. Replace them as 0x46 Image type on right click, then write ROM.

Insert pictorial. Change the category to armor or something like that. Then double click it. Should make finding it easier.

They were actually part of the background file (level). You'd have to replace an object using Edit Models tools if you want a bed, from a bed model.

It lets you pick from the visual images (jpgs) of all the images. 00action made the pics. So you don't have to use name, can see pics, and also see organized by category. Try it out.

Hello, i have a problem in saving files using this editor, for some reason it just crashes on me when i try to save. I have followed all of the advice on the FAQ including the installion of the correct Direct X files. The Goldeneye setup editor worked on my previous computer and have taken the dll's needed from it too but it still will not work. Any help for this problem would be greatly appreciated?

Should be a tutorial on adding rooms, but it is complicated, but is possible if you follow tutorial and learn editor. When you finish generate an xdelta patch using editor and send it over.

I fixed the cant find d3dx9_30 may need renstalling problem ------------------------------------ Selution Frist you need to get directx9 and then when you get your setup editor when your installing the program you will see Microsoft VS2008 Redist Highlighted click on it to get it then gusses what it work the program will run and now it fixed thankyou wirte back if you need help godbless

I'm currently working on a sketch of Mumbo's Mountain for this goldeneye 007. It will probably take me about a half month to two months to finish the sketch depending on how much free time I can get to work on it. Do you think the program can support sketches that big with banjo kazooie textures used?

Hmm. Maybe some of object values in object window too? When this situation happens, I open a level with drone gun, copy it, then open my level and paste. Then you know it will work.

I put a few drone guns in my level, but they are not shooting. I toggled the activate drone gun bitflag and the look at preset option.

It's not supported by the editor, but it is supported to rip all binary files via GEDecompressor. Those just give by address, they're pretty close to GE NTSC, 89F700 is Ump_setupameZ and they should go in same order as in setup editor.

I'm sure this is already answered somewhere, between this site and the forum, but anyway.. Assuming I were able to acquire a Goldeneye NTSC-J ROM, would there be any way that I could look at it with this editor? Or is there some sort of tool I could use to generate the files necessary to open it with the editor? I was hoping to see if I could find any differences between NTSC and NTSC-J that I'm not already aware of (Caverns 00 body armors, Silo cinemas, seemingly more powerful auto-aim). If it's not possible, no big deal. I was just curious. Thanks for any info!

i dont think the guards have that kind of programming...but it was a neat zombie map...i kept quiet so nobody would copy me...like release a map pack...like Black Ops... ZOMBIES but soviet... zombies with a WHOLE backstory and a couple of easter eggs

Inject moves rom and perfectly sizes compressed file while convert tries to fit in current spot without shifting rom. Inject is safer.

Funny, I tried taking the normal Bunker II setup file and i converted it to rom, but the level just stays black. It seems like its only that level that doesnt work.

If you open normal one, then inject, does it work? Sometimes you run out of texture memory as you edit if you have too much variety of characters or models.

Whenever I play my edited level on Bunker II, before the level starts, it freezes. The screen either stays black with the music still playing or the music sometimes stops with a black screen. I only edited a couple doors in the level and put a few drone guns. any ideas?

This is a really good editor, but I have to ask.. I keep getting problems like certain PD levels being too big when I try to playtest them, and when I try to do xdelta patching, it won't detect the expansion pack so I can't play the single player levels, which I had edited a bit. Then again, I can't find an xdelta patching tutorial for the PD levels, and since there is no help file that came with it.. yeah. Why isn't there a help manual with it anyway? Just curious.

Yes you can make levels in Sketchup, Radeon has made Fort Knox in Sketchup. The level is for the currently presumed dead mod Goldfinger 64.

Oh I see. that's cool. I have gotten a little confused with all of the files that I'm retexturing. So many of the same ones in different folders. I wish there was an easier way to track them down. It's very tedious and I've been wondering if there is an easier way. I asked on shootersforever.com but I have had no response. Does anyone here know if there is an easy way to distinguish and locate the dumped textures from Goldeneye to retexture them in high resolution? I have already worked out a lot of it but I'm a little lost now. Thank you so much to anyone who answers.

It can replace textures easily, though just be warned they can't be replaced with hi res ones, just normal ones.

Yes, the box is checked, and literally every other level works fine when I perform the same actions. In my previous post I accidentally listed UsetupextractionZ.bin, rather than UsetupescapeZ.bin as being one of the problem files, if that helps at all.

I'm having some issues with a few Perfect Dark levels. All of the area 51 levels (UsetupextractionZ.bin, UsetupinfiltrationZ.bin, UsetupmaiansosZ.bin, and UsetuprescueZ.bin) freeze if I change to Clipping, Portals/BG, or Room Positions mode and right click in the visual editor. Also UsetupwarZ.bin, and UsetupskedarZ.bin crash as soon as the visual editor loads. All the other PD and GE levels seem to work fine most of the time.

You need to insert a 2E camera point, rotate it how you like, then use action blocks to trigger it. Also there's a toggle in the particular action, 1 means always point at Bond, 0 means use the 2E point's rotation. Alright, I use windows XP if that means anything. Now, here is what happens, I place a guard and turn it in the right direction. Then i attempt to resize it and the editor crashes. I can place other objects including guns without the editor crashing, and if this means anything, when i place gun bunkers it crashes right away. Can you tell me how to fix this?

Moving Elevator: This isn't possible in GoldenEye. Atleast, not at this time. The tiles on which you walk cannot move, so there's no way to elevate your current height. Perfect Dark allowed players to stand on objects, making elevators possible. But in GoldenEye, you can only stand on the tank. It'd take some serious work to get something like that going. Currently, we aren't able to do it.

download the perfect dark level viewer and put it in the editor folder then open the setup editor open project and all the perfect dark levels should be there and that will allow you to open projects

It might be possible with the subroutine command 06 after returning from jal go to 01 not sure if possible though 060001 Set Return Subroutine From JAL (JAL TO: 0001) 05FD0007 JAL To Function (Guard [whatever called it]) (JAL TO: 0007) however since jal 0007 is not a subroutine it might not be possible unless you find a subroutine that allows the guard to follow the path.

Nope, can't have a drone gun on your own side (though would be cool). You can't delete fog, but can change it's range/color on stage options.

yea but the level still works and everything works out the way i set it out apart from a vehicle path where it gets stuck at wall which i could have easily fixed but now i am left with a shell of a level but still pretty nifty for about 17 guards

Click Forums on here, and then register. For guns, I think you assign them an action block with it, and that 04XX block has a gun spawn. Check Runway's setup file (UsetuprunZ.bin)

The proximity thing's a little weird - I recommend looking at some of the levels to see how it works (for example, the Hostage Negotiations in Streets or BMW's library). To have a guard spawn when an alarm goes off, there's an action block to check if alarm goes off, and if so, you use the BD spawn guard command. See Rare's levels or BMW's library for example. I recommend you both join the forums (goldeneyeforever.com) so everyone can help with more detailed responses! Glad to see the interest!

I got the health thing but now im back for more... ah, ok so i have coded an action block for if bond is close to a guard he will look at him, and text will display. on the code Within Proximity of Bond theres three slots for numbers (00 00 00) I did what you did in the tutorial and made it 00 20 01 but this did not work at all, he did not look at me and no text was displayed. How does the proximity of bond work exactly?

Did you, by any chance, move or delete all L__E.bin and UBrief__Z.bin files in the main GE directory? Or did you change your active directory in preferences? It uses that directory to locate files, so if you moved that dir or moved the files, there won't be any there.

Well, to clarify after i export the edited text file LdamE uncompressed.. Theres no option to save my settings or anything... just the x so i close the window and bring up Edit Briefings. All the options are blank including Filename: so I can't choose UbriefdamZ or anything at all. When I go back to edit text everything has resseted and I have to import the LdamE so that I can see the text again.. but then I close it.. rinse repeat. Ive been working on this level all night and I know ill prolly be waiting ages to get a reply... which sucks because I cant find info about this anywheres..

Man, im following your guides but your leaving out small but crucial stuff Im noticing.. In ur guide theres no explanation for this. Ok well i edited the text of LdamE or w/e and saved it, then converted my rom.. Now i go to edit briefings and theres absolutely nothing to choose from. I cant select a file name cus theres none to choose from. I know im suppose to be using UbriefdamE or w/e its called but it doesnt even give me the option to select it... WTF?

Hey I just started using this and the first time I put a guard in the Dam and made a guy patrol all the way from the beginning of the truck to where it stops, and for the most part it worked. I accidently coded him to not shoot if he sees bond so there i go to correct it.. Now no matter what i do to the Dam level, add 1 guy to walk.. and it freezes before it actually begins on Project64. However, if i start up my normal rom of the unhacked 007, the dam works fine. Any help PLEASE?

i did but i gave up on the guard moving so he just stands there now and i -mt -ma up as far as could where the level worked and it has fixed most of the texture problems but the aimer and bullets is there anything else i can do

Convert ROM is to play the ROM yourself. Make IPS to send to others. Apply IPS to play others levels. Taka - do you have path presets (little green orbs)? I would say try it on a simple level first, then when you've mastered it move it to yours.

It means you have a really lot of types of objects. It's a bit tricky, but do Tools -> 21990 editor, choose your ROM you made, click stage options, pick your level, then increase -mt and -ma only a tiny bit. Like say raise mt 100 and ma 50. Keep inching them up, see if it helps. You will need to click Write ROM when you are finished to test it out. Make sure if its 1P or 2P or 4P you pick the right choice, if given an option.

If applyed the IPS patch and converted the ROM and i press F5 and it says Error: Commpressed file is 0x40C8 bytes, and must be less than 0x3B00 bytes, and then it says Failed ROM conversion. So do you kow what i should do?

Which stage? Some aren't set up for guard AI yet. Unless I know which stage it is I can't tell you how to fix it.

GoodN64 can't verify these roms, mostly because they've been hacked ;*) It only applies to original rom images. Secondly, guards are peculiar. In order to move properly there must be path data present and something else called pads. If you added them to a multiplayer stage, most likely they won't work at first. You must either build or work from sets made specificly for each level. In this way, they can see where the player is and don't lag the game to snot.

I am running on a Vista, and I DL-ed GE editor 2.2. The editor crashes every time I try to open it, and a popup indicates that the files "d3dx9_31.dll" was not found, however it is in the "GEEdit2" file, and I never deleted or moved it. Hey! That was MY blog that "a guy" found that entry in. Some paraphrasing's been done here, though. Also, Zoinkity, the purpose of my writing that piece was not to give a generalisation, roughly equivalent to "it sucks" -- I've seen videos on YouTube of what the programme can do (Dragonsbrethren's Silo, for example). The idea was to say that it needs a great deal of simplification if beginners want any hope of using it. Maybe not in the application, itself, but at least in the documentation. If action blocks and their purpose for existing are explained in greater detail (since it seems that the entire game relies heavily on them), perhaps more people could understand how to use the editor. When a 27 present door is a standard object i change it to a door so i can change the door sound but when i do that the door goes all weird. Is there any thing i can do about it?

F5 only sticks the stage into your rom. To play it, open the rom in PJ64.

When ive converted the ROM and done the IPS patch, do i press F5 to start my level or do i go to Project 64 to select the GoldenEye ROM

I'd contend that of all the N64 editors this one's about the only one that isn't a total utter nightmare to use. You don't need knowledge of C by any stretch. The closest thing is the action command thingie, and if that's a nightmare it's my fault for not providing enough info on building the stuff easily. Ideally we'd have an interface more like the compiler 'Inform', used to construct text-based adventures. Although actions are an important part of stages, they aren't necessary. Standard guard actions can be handled entirely by the basic actions already preloaded. The setup editor was originally designed to place, move, and replace objects in the stage. It does this remarkably well, using a point-and-click interface. It should be no problem making a few guards, putting stuff in, and having at the very least an Aztec-ish level. Even most standard objectives - blow this up, enter room, etc. are really easy to set up. Having a fairly intimate knowledge of this stuff I can say not just a good deal, but most of the complexity of the hacking necessary to do this stuff is completely masked from the user. For instance, you don't need to worry about the order objects appear to keep them from borrowing attributes, or interlinking table entries, or recalculating pointers to compensate for the different sizes, data types, etc used in all the different objects. Just knowing what direction something really is supposed to face is a huge advantage over hex editting the snot out of the stages. That said, more of the complexity can be masked. We could, ideally, eliminate the need to do float conversions altogether, or set all scale modifiers to use decimal percents, or a dozen other little additions here and there. I guess the point of this defense is that there wasn't much of anything constructive to the criticism. Just, "it sucks". I'm guessing most of the issue has to do with the utter complexity of the action block editor, which again, isn't nearly as bad as it could be. As for that, I'll set to work on a system to simplify the editing, then pass it to Sub.

They can't be in the air unless you put an object to them. They get forced to the ground as 00 presets anyways, so no point unless an object with in air flag toggled.

I didn't think that much technical knowledge was needed for basic levels. Some of the more advanced stuff seriously does need some effort to learn, but it's not that bad. Believe me, I've simplified it from what it could've been. Can I have a link to that article? I would appreciate feedback on how to make it more user friendly, I had no idea it was that bad.

i found this on someones blog "A modding group called the "Rare Witch Project" has released a programme called "GoldenEditor 2.0", also known as "GoldenEye Setup Editor". I downloaded that programme in an attempt to make a nifty new stage for GoldenEye 007. The only thing I could do was to place objects in the level and move the camera about. In order to actually make the level do anything, one requires extensive knowledge of the programming language, C. To add insult to injury, the programme's creators have written all of the documentation in a way that only computer programmers, who have spent seven years at university, mastering videogame creation languages, could understand. The most basic of the tutorials they provided made passing references to bitflags and byteflipping, as though everyone in the world knows what those things are. Now, one could argue that programmers are the only people who care about videogames enough to want to edit them. Untrue. I know many people who would jump at the chance to make their own thing for a videogame -- it may not be the entire game that they would make, but just editing a level would be quite sufficient. They're not computer programmers -- they don't know the difference between the X-axis and the Y-axis... blimey, some of them can't even tell a calculator from an abacus! I suspect that a lot more people would be interested in modifying games if they could understand how to do it." i agree with this guy-your program is a bear to use

Same as Rare, we use clever tricks ;) You will have something in action blocks like "If Bond within X units of Guard, Guard runs to Preset YYYY. If Guard Within Z Units of Preset YYYY, set alert. You can also have him do an animation at that time.

Whenever I try to "Open Uncompressed", I get an error message -- "GoldenEye Setup Editor has encountered a problem and needs to close." If I try to load things any other way, I get other kinds of error messages, just nothing that shuts the programme down. I suspect it's because I've got a video chipset, rather than a video card. Are my suspicions correct? Or is there a different reason?

Yes, I do have the VS2008 Redist and DX 9.0. I'm still getting this same problem over and over. There might be something wrong with the file you have us download. If you have one that doesn't cause this problem that would be great Subdrag. PS. I dowloaded this before I reformatted my harddrive and worked great. Now is just failing on me :(. -Jtek

Octon Baron have you gone to "Tools" and then "Preferences". Then you u go down to the bottom and choose the Goldeneye Rom you want to convert.

I would look at action blocks from current levels such as the Vietnam solo level, or I think the advanced action block tutorial contains help on how to do that.

If using console with codes input and waiting in the infinite loop on black screen. On emulator you just load the level after applying ips patch or converting rom.

I'm having a problem, too. Whenever I start the editor, I get a message that says, "This application has failed to start because d3dx9_28.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." Would re-installation fix it, or will I need to do something else? FTR, I installed the VC++ redist, and dxdiag says I have DX9.0c.

In the Tools -> Preferences menu, in the Visual Editor tab, there's a world move speed slider or something like that, which adjusts how fast you move when you press Q.
